Traditional Contouring --Step Two of Four to a Flawless Face

Now that you’ve had some time to practice the correct techniques for applying your foundation, it is now time to learn how to provide some depth to your face. No one’s face is ONE color so in order to have a really natural look you also need to apply a bronzer, blush, and highlight. This post will cover traditional contouring and two separate posts will be written detailing the ways to apply your blush and highlight. If you are trying to achieve a truly natural look by using these four steps make sure that your foundation matches you face, not your neck. In general, people’s faces are lighter than their necks and you need that brightness to shine through the contouring.
What You’ll Need:
-a MATTE bronzer that’s about two to four shades darker than your skin color (I recommend NYC’s Smooth Skin Bronzer in “Sunny”. Almost a universally flattering color and under $3)
- An angled completion/contour brush
-a kabuki brush
-a flat eyeshadow brush
If you don’t have many brushes I would recommend picking up ELF studio line brushes ($3) or Target’s brand brushes. These brushes are soft and get the job done without breaking the bank.
Places to Contour:
Under Cheek bones
-You want to apply your bronzer (using the angled brush) just under your cheek bones. If you’re having trouble finding the correct spot it’s typically from the top of your ear to the corner of your mouth but everyone has a different bone structure so you can always make that fishy face to double check.
Temples and Forehead
-Start the bronzer on your temple and drag upwards toward the center of your forehead and repeat on the opposite side. Keep the bronzer on your forehead thinner then than on your temples.
Sides of Nose
-You want to apply your bronzer (with an eyeshadow brush) to the sides of your nose to make it appear narrower.
After you have completed these steps go back with the kabuki brush and blend those lines out and you’re finished.
